Mkoko House is situated on Manda Island, part of the Lamu Archipelago, off the North Coast of Kenya. It is directly opposite Lamu Island and faces Shela village (on Lamu Island) which is just across the channel. |

Manda Island lies directly opposite Lamu Island. It is considerably less built up than
Lamu Island and only has about 20 private houses and beach bungalows.
The island is
incredibly tranquil and boasts an extensive mangrove ecosystem and array of birds and
monkeys. Manda Beach faces Shela village (on Lamu Island) and the two are separated by a
5 minute boat ride across the narrow channel. |

Lamu Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and famous for its distinctive coastal
traditions and way of life. Lamu Old Town is a bustling ancient town with tons to offer in
ways of cuisine, culture, and more.
Shela Village about 2 km from Lamu Town is
considerably smaller and therefore quieter. The village is incredibly charming with its
narrow lanes and paths which cut through the village like a maze. |
