The House
A private house on the Lamu coast
Mkoko is one house, taken as a whole. Four double bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, can sleep up to eight guests — a size that suits a family, or a few friends travelling together.
The common areas for gathering are the heart of it: a long table under a high makuti roof for enjoying delicious meals prepared by Idi, barazas – long stone benches where, in local traditional coastal culture, people sit and talk.
Arched niches frame the ground floor, and niru floors – a traditional, smooth lime-and-coral plaster finishing creates a seamless, cool, and velvety surface. You will find yourselves drifting between the inside and outside all day.
Beyond the main rooms there is a kitchen and a garden that acts as an extension another set of spaces — including the treehouse. Manda beach is a short walk away.
